The age of hookah bars has gone from “this cute little thing that you have to keep in the back of your hotel room and then you put on a little mask to get out of the room” to “this thing that has got this really big screen on it and you have got to keep it in the room”.
And with so many outlets now catering to different tastes and preferences, the price of hookahs has been going up at a faster rate than ever before.
“It’s all a matter of perception,” says Nicky.
“If you have a really big hookah bowl, people think it’s expensive, so you need to add a mask.”

In the late 19th century, when it was first invented, there was no such thing as a hookahs’ mask.
It was the idea that you put a little little bit on the top of your head and put it on your mouth, so it looked like you were going to swallow it, rather than inhaling it.
At the time, there were a lot of hookys who thought the idea was a joke.
A Victorian woman named Mary was one of those.
She bought a pair of gloves and made her own hookahs.
Mary didn’t want to be thought of as a freak, she thought, because she was just a woman who wanted to make a good living.
She went to work in a hotel, but her bosses thought she was crazy and fired her.
But it was Mary’s mother, a nurse from nearby Northumberland who became a mentor for her.
Mary decided to start her own business.
For the next 15 years, she made her hookahs herself, selling them for $1 to $3 a pack, with the help of a local jeweller who made them for her and her family.
Nowadays, Mary makes around $1,000 a year from her business.
It’s not just Mary who’s selling her products.
Many of the other hookahs around town are selling for between $20 and $40, which is about half of what Mary makes.
The big issue is the lack of quality, says Andrew.
“We’ve got people who are trying to make money on it, but it’s really hard to get them to make good quality hookahs.”
When you’re buying hookahs online, you can usually get them for around $5-10, but Andrew says some hookahs go for up to $20 a pack. “
So, it gets a little unfair when people make $10,000 or $15,000 [per year] on hookahs, because that’s all they get.”

Andrew is also looking to start a brand new business, which could mean he’ll need to take on more of the work of making his hookahs and selling them.
